Empowering Those With Mental Illness
Most of us have no direct experience with people who suffer from chronic mental illness. So we don’t understand what their lives are like or what help they need. There is also a fear and a stigma associated with the diagnosis. The staff at Volunteers of America of Wisconsin provide support and residential services to people with chronic mental illness in Wisconsin. We empower them to thrive in the community and to successfully manage their illness with residential care and supported independent living. Megan Schwobe is a Program Manager in our group homes and works with our residents who are dealing with mental health struggles every day. Megan has a BA in Sociology, a minor in Social Work and is currently working on her master’s degree. She recently sat down with me to share her insights on “a day in the life” of our residents and the issues they are working hard to manage.
