Affordable HousingVolunteers of America is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit providers of quality, affordable housing for low- and moderate-income families, people with disabilities and the elderly. Volunteers of America incorporates many support activities into its housing initiatives. Many communities offer computer learning centers and youth development programs. Many of our elderly homes have professionally staffed recreational, social, and health services. We also provide care facilities for people with mental and physical disabilities, as well as for people coping with HIV and AIDS. Many of the people served by Volunteers of America suffer from a lack of affordable housing and its consequence, homelessness. Because their situation is so precarious, and because decent housing is such a fundamental need, housing has been and will continue to be a principal focus of our efforts. Our goal is to preserve existing affordable housing and build more to serve families, seniors and people with disabilities. Homeless families are a particular concern; they now make up 40 percent of the total homeless population. Because Volunteers of America operates more than 200 housing and health care facilities, we have acquired special expertise in this area, and are continuing to put that expertise to good use. The need is greater than Volunteers of America could ever hope to fill, but our facilities-living proof that compassion and efficiency are wholly compatible-are beacons of hope both to the people who need housing and to the private and public agencies that are trying to provide it. Volunteers of America-Wisconsin presently has 17 buildings in 9 cities in southeastern Wisconsin. Most cities require that the income level for a single person be below $21,000 per year in order to be eligible to live at these properties.
